    GEOGRAPHY OF ROME:

    1. Ancient Rome was found on land next to the Mediterranean Sea.

    2. It is located on the continent of Europe.

    3. Today, Rome is found in the country of Italy (a country in Europe).

     

    GOVERNMENT OF ROME:

    • Ancient Rome had a "republican" form of government

    • This can also be called a "representative democracy".

     

    AGRICULTURE OF ROME:

    1. The Ancient Romans had limited rich soil.

    2. They had to learn to farm on hillsides.

    3. They built irrigation systems to bring in water for their farms.

    4. They were able to grow grapes and olives really well.

     

    ARCHITECTURE OF ROME:

    1. The Ancient Romans' most famous building was the Coliseum (a large amphitheater for sporting events)

    2. The Romans became famous for using arches in their buildings.

    3. They also built "aqueducts" to carry fresh water into the city from the distant hills for the water supply.

     

    ADAPTATIONS:

    1. The Ancient Romans had to learn to farm on hillsides.

    2. They traded for what they needed on the Mediterranean Sea with other nearby countries.

    3. They irrigated the farm land so that plants would grow.

     

    MUSIC & ART IN ROME:

    1. The Ancient Romans loved to make pottery, sculpture, and mosaics.

    2. Mosaics are small pieces of tile placed so that they form a picture.

     

    RELIGION:

    1. The Ancient Romans worshiped many gods and goddesses.

    2. They believed that Jupiter was the father or leader of the gods and goddesses.

     

    SPORTS:

    1. Gladiators fought each other or wild animals to entertain Roman spectators.

    2. Chariot races were also held in the Coliseum.

     

    ROLES OF MEN, WOMEN, and CHILDREN:

    1. Only men were citizens and could vote.

    2. Women were the caretakers of children and their place was in the home.

    3. Only boys were educated.

    4. Girls were taught handicrafts and household chores by their mothers.

     

    ECONOMIC SPECIALIZATIONS OF ROME:

    • The Ancient Romans were excellent at growing grapes and olives,  making pottery,  and building ships and roads.

    • They created some of the earliest concrete.

     

    ECONOMIC INTERDEPENDENCE:

    • The Romans depended on Greece, Egypt and other nearby countries to get the things they needed.

     

    CONTRIBUTIONS:

    1. We still use arches today like those in the Roman Coliseum and aqueducts.

    2. Our government is based on ideas that were developed in both Ancient Greece and Rome.

    3. Our first leaders of the United States of America borrowed ideas on becoming a republic or representative democracy from Ancient Rome.

    4. A republic or representative democracy is a government in which people vote for or elect a representative or group of representatives to make rules and laws for everyone.
